Speaker: Mohit Nitin Shenvi, Ph.D., Terramechanics, Multibody, and Vehicle Systems Laboratory, Virginia Tech
This talk focuses on the literature of snow characterization and on an analysis performed to identify the extent to which testing conditions affect the traction coefficient of tires using the ASTM 14-inch Standard Reference Test Tire (SRTT) on snow.
The performance of the tires on snow places high demands on the skill of the driver, giving impetus for improved snow tires. However, the winter tires are generally evaluated for their performance in accordance with the ASTM F1805 standard which is performed in a compacted snow condition. Many classical devices do not perform well when it comes to in-situ characterization of compacted snow.
Another area of focus will be the performance evaluation of a custom in-house device against the Clegg impact hammer and CTI penetrometer when employed in the field for measurements on a compacted snow test track at the Smithers Winter Test Center.
Mohit Shenvi would like to thank the Center for Tire Research (CenTiRe) for their support of this research. || website | LinkedIn
